Shiatsu translates from Japanese as ‘finger pressure’. It is founded on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine theory.
Shiatsu can assist an individual with their self-development and self-healing. Balancing the underlying causes of a condition and addressing physical pain or tension and psychological functions such as stress and anxiety.
Shiatsu is a Japanese therapeutic bodywork, it includes massage, acupressure, muscle stretching, and corrective exercises. Touch and pressure can be applied to the body by the practitioner’s thumbs, palms, elbows, knees and feet. Pressure can be gentle or firm, depending on the condition being treated.
Treatment may also include the use of flowing stretches and gentle rotations of the limbs and joints, simple alignments and muscle release techniques. This encourages circulation and the flow of lymphatic fluid. It also works on the autonomic nervous system, helping to release toxins and tension from the muscles and stimulating the hormonal system. Additionally, shiatsu allows the receiver to deeply relax, stimulating the body’s inherent ability for self-healing and regeneration.
Shiatsu encourages your parasympathetic nervous system to be activated (rest, digest, connection), while allowing the sympathetic nervous system to ease (fight, flight, freeze, or fawn). This function is especially beneficial for people who experience anxiety, stress and for those who have experienced trauma.
The person receiving shiatsu remains clothed, while the session takes place on a futon on the floor. With consent, supporting techniques such as Cupping, Moxibustion and Gua Sha may also be incorporated into the treatment.
